To begin, it is necessary to pause for a moment and reflect on one’s own vision in relation to “sexism”. What comes on your mind when you hear this word? What does sexism trying to tell us? Does sexism exist in media? Let me tell you first what sexism is- Sexism n. is a discriminatory or abusive behavior towards members of the opposite sex especially against women (Merriam Webster Dictionary). This kind of issue is quite alarming. We are not aware that the problem in sexism exists, that it is presence in the broadcasting industry or in any form of mass media. However, we don’t know how severe the situation lingers.
As media continue to shape our society, it reinforces certain attitudes that encourage sexism. The distressing truth is the ignorance from the male; they always think that everything at work is normal. Some men are really unaware of the mistreatment and see sexism as natural. Others probably know this issue but pretend and insist on riding on the wave that favors them instead of jeopardizing their career opportunities. Sometimes women are misunderstood by the existence of male supremacy in the television networks.
Mass media portrays women as sexual objects or as a people who fight too hard in order to survive in a men’s world. Women are seen as being better suited to being married and keeping a home rather than going out into the high-powered world. Is that so? Woman can also do what men can do, it just that men are always seen as ready to take action. Nevertheless, this bias is still evident in the world of media. The media gives more priority to men because of their strong personality; they fail to highlight the contributions of the women except to point out their mistakes, which says to be the result of trying to play in the men’s game.
The media must find a way to halt the prejudiced views in order to establish a more balance importance between the two sexes.
